The Vain-ity Project: Thoughts of a BBW!

Bold. Big. Beautiful. Bossy. Brave. All adjectives describing any of the b's in the urban to mainstream term BBW. I'm curious to know when you hear BBW what is your 1st thought? Do you automatically place the B as Big? Do you often go by the definition of society where there are false representations on what that truly stands for or do you have your own definition? For me B stands for BOLD, to be a plus size female takes boldness. It often takes breaking the standards that other have set for beauty. It means taking a stand for those who haven't found their voice yet or have been brainwashed by their environment that thinner is better. It means taking a bold stand for younger generations to grow up confident and most importantly comfortable in their own skin. The next B is for BEAUTIFUL, beauty that is inside as well as out. I think that we don't tell ourselves enough that we are beautiful I believe the quote is "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". We have beautiful minds that are filled with wisdom and knowledge that is often unnoticed because of our mere body image. Beautiful spirits beautiful enough to stand by someone of the same body image struggle grabs their hand looks in the other ones eyes and say "you are not alone". There is more than just one thing that makes us beautiful. Most importantly I am a Woman...the same woman who bring life into this world. To soothe the pain of those that hurt. The same woman who educates our future and ultimately run the free world (shout out to Hilary). We are women, true our size is bigger, that just simply means there is more greatness to go around.

The Vain-ity Project: Curves and Confidence. The Vain-ity Project: Curves and Confidence exists to provide a platform for women to confidently celebrate their curves without fear or contradiction. Our goal is to redefine the beauty representations for women of color, encourage self love through self image and empower confidence levels through conversation, poetry, and photography (art). This liberating shoot definitely has curves, confidence, and conversation, the kind of conversation that need to be had more often. These women including myself share what a day and a life is in our (BBW) shoes, so many think they know but really have no idea. I hope that this project reaches at least one. The girl who is shunned and shut out at school because of her size. The woman who finds someone attractive all for the person to respond with nasty negative hurtful words because of their unresolved anger issues from the one that once rejected them. To that young lady who refuses to eat because society says anything over size 4 is too big and she just want to be accepted. That woman that I once was taking verbal and physical abuse because I thought no one else wanted me. My self esteem was at 0 once upon a time, but once I broke that mind set and detoxed everything she said I wasnt I felt cleansed. I felt as if i was the woman I'm destined to be I just had to put myself in a better place. Let this be the breakthrough that is needed, I know this Vain-ity project will not be in vain.

All to often, we suffer the loud and empty opinion of others. Being a celebrity doesnt excuse one from being attached. I definitely want to give a round of applause to one of my favorite artist Pink. I have always admired her "girl power" with songs such as "Stupid Girls" "So What" and "Raise Your Glass". Well it seems that this past Saturday she attended a cancer benefit for one of her dear friends and this was her look:

And of course the "Twitter Trolls" had to find something wrong about her:

And well here was her perfect response:

Peace and Blessings,
Swagg P.

Confessions of An Artist: My T.R.U.T.H- Real, Unapologetic Healing- I CARE Campaign

Negative, depressed, dark, and pain are just some words to describe the condition of my heart during what is Still the worst day of my existence: 10.1.10 was a day symbolic to a record getting caught on the bent needle of an old record player. It replays over and over the same sound, the same agonizing pain that any mother would feel, if she heard that because of her choice in love, she'd been deemed unfit. Feelings of remorse, confusion and injustice were minimal compared to feelings of defeat, defamation, and embarrassment. Yet my anger, my rage was agonizing especially when those thoughts became calls of action. I'd become so paralyzed with grief, hatred and dark desires that I withdrew from the world around me. There was no light in the space I had been forced to live in. The only thing that existed was the poison that handicapped me and...a pen and a pad.

I'm not certain what forced my hand, to change my mind...my first guess is that I'd grown tired of being still, stagnant in grief. I knew that what I was feeling needed to be released, told, shared with someone, anyone that was willing to listen. If nothing more, I knew that it couldn't continue to reside in me, taking my mind, body, and soul hostage. So I begin to write. That act alone was so monumental in my life that I haven't stopped writing. Picking up that pen was the beginning of my healing, the releasing of hate. It was then that I wrote my first poem, entitled My Side of the Story. My Side details the custody battle that changed Everything in my life. I shared that poem publicly for the first time at HeArt and Soul Produced by K. Dapree. I was received with open arms as I stood on the stage with my paper, reading and exposing, something so real and live:  My T.R.U.T.H. (Telling Real Unapologetic Truths Thru Healing). From that sharing, K. Dapree invited me not only to write for what was at the time one of his new project, but to also share more of my Truths at the T.R.U.T.H. Project.

Neither of us knew it at the time, but that was the beginning of a journey that has taken an identity of its own. I am still writing not just to heal myself this time, but to encourage and excite healing in others. The T.R.U.T.H Project and all of its affiliates cared enough to give share their platform with me and allow me to share my pain and my healing. When in an environment of caring it makes it second nature to care too. Which leads me to share further. The T.R.U.T.H Project has launched the I CARE Campaign so that it may continue to offer opportunities to nurture new writers and provide platforms for healing and creative expression. To learn more about the campaign, to donate, and show that YOU too CARE visit www.ExperienceTheTruth.com. I encourage everyone to share their healing point and the appointed healer and/or platform that has allowed you to move forward in your life as it may save someone else's. All information and direct links to the T.R.U.T.H Project and the I Care Campaign can be found at www.SweetToothMedia.com

Queen Bey: Says Bow Down...as H-Town Stands Up

Well if you want to see how fast someone's panties can get in a bunch all you need to do is something outside of the box that they put you in and almost instantly, panties worn by hypocrites  self- proclaimed judges, and delusional gods all simultaneously synchronize into this decades worst wedgies. If that's to much work, we could always ask Beyonce'. Mrs. Carter has long been the topic of discussion, hate, praise and everything in between. Her latest opinion jerker is her single, Bow Down from her Blue Ivy album.

Re-introducing fans to Sasha Fierce, it seems that Queen Bey brought every bottled "Read" that she'd been harboring during her stint of political correctedness (Yea, I made that Up). She may just earn another fan with this song, however. Prior to the release of this single, Bey remained relevant, after receiving publicity about her inaugural performance and then her show stopping performance at the Super Bowl. After stirring up the gossip mills and brews, Bey does it again a midst what appears to be more of a fan fueled twitter beef with Keshia Cole. Cole criticizes Queen Bey for not being "consistent" enough in the public display of class. But she isn't the only one displeased with Beyonce's alter ego returning. Some of Bey's fans seem to like the "prude" high society presentation that she gives the world and according to Facebook posts and status updates, this song Bow Down was "out of character" for her and possibly knocks her out of the race to be America's Next Best Role Model. Have fans forgot other edgy songs with the Queen Bey stamp on it such as Bills, Irreplaceable, Ego, and Diva? While all address a woman-centered topic and range from one end of the ratchet spectrum to another, its all a matter of perception. Bow Down is another knot on that belt...But when was an instruction manual released on operating the box that they've built and put her in? It is no secret that many people view celebrities in a light specific to their experiences, and while I have never been a huge Bey fan, I think that her "new" naysayers are disappointed in their glorified perception of the image they created for her.

Any and all artists should be able to create and perform without censorship. Its not the artist fault that people get offended by their creative expressions or truths. For Bey, Now should be no exception. Bey has actually earned the right to say what needs to be said in the way that she want to be say it.  I actually think this track is rather strategic...genius even. Returning to the her down south roots, she samples Texas greats such as UGK and shouts out Willie D. She reclaims a shakeable home base and rekindle the fire. Further more, Bow Down shows the rest of the world that she is human, not super human. Hats off to you Bey for doing what you want to do!!!

Valentine's Day: Loving YOURSELF to Pieces!

Valentine's Day is quickly approaching and for all the lovers out there its a wonderful thing. Mates join in the commercialized hustle and bustle to show their significant other JUST how much they love them as they profess all for the world to see. For the skeptics and singles, Valentine's Day is OverRated and is viewed as just another day. While both of those extremes are present, I come to aid the "gray matters" in arriving at a common ground. Being single during any celebratory occasion can be quite disappointing, but that's only for the pessimists of the world. Who better than to spend the day of Love with, than the person you love the most: Yourself?

To see the world differently, we must change our perception and thought process. Not having a date on Valentine's day isn't the end of the world. As a matter of fact, being alone on V-Day can be just as much fun as hanging out with some random date or the person you've been meaning to break up with for months but don’t have the balls to do it. Being alone is cheaper, easier and probably a hell of a better idea. Now one may ask what in the world can I do on V-Day to ensure that I'm not dwelling on the fact that I'm alone...The answer is simple, you can do plenty. As a lover of all things self, it no longer bothers me to see others happy and in love. It restores my faith in the existence of true love and provides me with that flicker of hope that a love interest that shares my vision will come along. So, don't focus on the PDA shown by lovers around you, internalize that and show yourself a little PDA as its necessary to lover yourself so much that you allow others the temporary enjoyment of your company. In lieu of Valentine's Day AND the Punany Poets Public Displays of Affection Tour, I recommend the following PRIOR to Valentine's Day.

1. Put yourself in a position to meet other singles- It is important to understand that YOU ARE NOT ALONE! There are thousands of available singles out there just like you and just like retailers capitalize on V-Day, matching services, party promoters, and the like also capitalize on your singledom by offering a variety of events to attend. In creating events where others, like you are just wanting to have a good time and mingle, planners understand the need to target the singles. Plan to attend these events, you may meet total jerks but you may also meet a few good ones. Either way enjoy the moment.

2. Enjoy your singledom...DATE as many or as few people as you would like to! By now you should have had time to mentally prepare yourself for being "alone" on V-Day. In that preparation your suitors or suitees await the moment to spend as much or as little time with you as you allow. So, schedule at least three dates for V-Day. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having breakfast, lunch and dinner with a different person in one day. Its fun, reassuring, and allows others to have a sample of  the best you.

3. Treat YOURSELF- Take yourself on a date! Enjoy all those things that you have really been wanting to do. Have cocktails, do something daring, or plan to spend a quite evening at home with tons of "toys". Whatever it is, no one will treat you better than you.

Loving you, makes it easy for others to love you too...Know your worth.

The S.W.E.E.T. Magazine Presents: A Sweet Christmas

As we look around and take in the world around us, its no surprise or secret that we are in a great economic deficit. Schools are cutting budgets, firing teachers; small businesses are loosing money and minimizing staff...all of this with Christmas right around the corner. I remember growing up hearing my grandmother say, "Christmas comes the same time every year, and there is no reason a child or family shouldn't have Christmas because its not as if people don't know that its coming, as it always does." I laugh at her logic for this statement and though this is true, earning potentials have been lessened, and spirits have been broken which makes it a tad bit harder to enjoy and "Remember the reason for the season". While this is disdaining, insulting, and stressing there is a little light at the end of tunnel.

The S.W.E.E.T. Magazine is pleased to announce the First Annual Sweet Christmas Give-A-Way. The premise for the give-a-way is to highlight and reward a deserving child and single parent. Children have so many temptations and reasons NOT to do well and be productive just as guardians have to keep going because its the only choice. The S.W.E.E.T Magazine and its staff would enjoy letting those that work hard and move on in spite of that there are people who notice and appreciate their contribution.

We are asking the public to nominate those that have worked diligently in their schools, jobs, and community. To submit your nomination of a Deserving Child and a Super mom, email MsNightLyfe.SweetToothMedia@gmail.com  Be sure to INCLUDE the Child's Wish List

Save the Drama For Your Mama: An exclusive Interview with VH1's Mama Drama Cast Members: Ashley and Sharon

Reality television has become a household name. And while there are mixed emotions about the content of these reality shows, the fact remains that the world tunes in. The entertainment of someone else's drama feed the entertainment fetish for many. I must admit, I am guilty of indulging and at times living vicariously through that drama presented on television. Fortunately, I don't have time to engage drama and the queens that deliver it, however, I do get my dose. Every major network from Bravo and Logo to BET and VH1 each offers their version of drama filled entertainment. VH1 has recently launched Mama Drama, a show that chronicles the relationships of mother and daughter duos. Including its dose of raunchy, and sometimes less than desirable content, the show no doubt has its critics. While, I'm not a fan of the show, I am a fan of women, reaching for their dreams... in this case, this Mama Drama Duo, Ashley and Sharon, are reaching by any means necessary and seem to be enjoying the climb.

Sweet Tooth Media was extended an opportunity to chat with the ladies of Mama Drama. As Ashley and Sharon, strolled in Houston's Galleria area Grand Lux Cafe, the place lit up with Spunk and Gorgeousness. Sharon, who is known as the Feisty Free Spirit, sits down and orders an apple martini and sends the waiter on his way, but not before she asks him, "You're a handsome youngster, Where is your father?" The waiter nervously walks away, as she sits with a look of conquest on her face. Ashley, then remembers that he didn't take her order, and she summons him back to the table. After ordering her extra strong Pina Colada, the waiter, then says "I Knowwww You!" After some reminiscing, it was determined that he and Ashley went to Lamar University together, down in Beaumont, TX. Ashley and Sharon are both college graduates with degrees in Human Resources. Sharon, states that it was the utmost importance that Ashley earned her college degree and that she catered to her needs to ensure that she reached her goal.  Sharon believes that when a parent caters to a child's needs that its a sign of a good parent.

Describing their relationship as very close, both Ashley and Sharon consider themselves as best friends. Ashley was an only child and growing up it was just she and Sharon. Sharon divorced Ashley's dad really early, so Ashley states that there is no real relationship with him. Ashley smiles, as she remembers that growing up, Sharon was a traditional "black mother" and that relationship really grew after Ashley graduated high school. She says, "My mom was Real, and she kept it Real with me at all times. I wasn't allowed to bring home C's and I was scared into refraining from sex, until, I was 17 years old...." Its almost as if they finished each others sentences when talking, and erupting in laughter at the "Same Damn Time" when funny things were disclosed. When asked how did they end up on Mama Drama, Sharon states that Ashley was sought out because of her friends and past appearance on the Bad Girls Club Season 5 on Twitter and the rest is history.

Get your Tea Cups ready, because the Tea Pot is hot! So, of course I had to find out about being actual Cast Members on Mama Drama and get the tea on living with the ladies in the Las Vegas Palms Casino Pent House. The ladies stated that difficult is understating what it was like living in a different home, with nine other people. With Ashley and Sharon, there was a total of 11 people living in a 2-roomed pent house....I was giving you time to process that living arrangement. Sharon states that the women thought of her as a "Push-over" because her dialect is proper, and she enunciates her words. Oh, but being a clean freak in a house full of what seemed to be normally messy women, showed them differently. Sharon, says that she cleans the shower twice a day because the some of the women REALLY are nasty and keep their areas unkempt. She gives an account in which one of the other moms, wears diapers, (even though she doesn't suffer from incontinence), and at night she takes her diaper off and throws it on the side of the bed. She states, "I thought I would have died if I walked on ONE MORE, pissy ass diaper..."Sharon also discloses that this same mother and her daughter go days without bathing. Ashley pipes in, stating that the daughter went a total of four days without a bathe....o_0! We wont even get into the discussion of unkempt vaginas, but I will utter two words: Blue Waffles.
Our conversation moves into Sharon's lack of commitment, who states proudly, "I Like My Freedom". Having been proposed to four or five times (Ashley says that its 5, but Sharon cant recall the 5th person- talk about Play on Playette), Sharon doesn't planning on marrying anytime soon. Ashley says, "When I graduated, my mom celebrated with me and she has never stopped." When asked about her own dating life, Ashley says that I'm dating and its open. When asked about the rumor on Media TakeOut of an alleged Love affair with San Antonio Spurs' DeJuan Blair, Ashley states that they are friends that ran into each other one night at a Houston night club and was photographed together. She says, "We are not dating, and I did not move in with him." So there you have it from the source herself. We all have to stay tuned to see if there are any revelations into Ashley's world of dating. Yet there it has been revealed that there are a plethora of racist-like behavior in the home. I cant help but mention the racial overtones on the show and indulge the ladies in a discussion about it. They both state that there are a ton of racial issues on the show. The obvious segregation on the first episode gives us only a peek into what occurs in the house. Ashley, states that the "Al Sharpton" comment made by Debbie, damned near incited a race war in the home. Both ladies, Ashley and Sharon go on to say that they eventually left it alone, but, the fact still remains, Race is an issue EVERYWHERE.

Mama Drama of course has its share of critics. When asked what type of feed back is received for being a cast member on the show, Sharon states that she receives most of the negative feedback because, viewers feel that she should be a better role model to Ashley. Sharon's response to that is, "if raising a college graduate, is a bad role model, I'll be one. My daughter is an adult, and so am I...So therefore, I do adult shit, I have been a role model to my child, and I encourage the parents that view the show, to be their child's role models as well. I certainly can agree with that notion, in the day and age where its best to blame others, for personal shortcomings... Mama Drama to date is one of the highest rating shows on television. The first two episodes reached 626,000 and 721,000 respectively, beating out Big Ang and Glee. There are no commercials shown during the airing of Mama Drama and the show is being produced by 495 Productions, the producers of Jersey Shore.

Besides Mama Drama, Ashley and Sharon both have business endeavors. Ashley just sold a lounge that she owned in Midtown Houston and plans on further her entrepreneur experience. Sharon, is has begun a Personal Matchmaking Service. Both ladies are in talks with other proposals by way of ATL. The interview with these ladies concludes with Sharon saying, I live my life happy and I have fun doing it. I suggest that people shouldn't do something that they will apologize for later..." In unison, she and Ashley both said, "We Do things we mean and will stay true to who we are!" The ladies have some upcoming projects in the works. Sharon has just taken a lead in a Play; while Ashley is preparing to star in an independent film.

Stay Tuned to more from Ashley and Sharon in the next issue of The S.W.E.E.T.®

Punany Power: An Exclusive and Intimate Interview, with The Punany Poet Creative Genius, Ms. Jessica Holter

Houston, TX: May 21, 2012- Enticing. Exquisite. Efficacious. Effervescent. Exotic. This is Everything that comes to mind when the name Jessica Holter is released from the lips of anyone that speaks it. Jessica Holter, Author / Producer / Activist and Creator of the Punany Poets is one of the most marvelous women, whom I've had the pleasure of speaking with. As an Erotica poet, you could have just imagined the excitement I exhibited when I heard that the Punany Poets were coming to Houston in June 2012. My earliest recollection of the fabulously talented Punany Poets dates back to the early 2000's when I was a sophomore at the University of New Orleans and in the learning prime of my own sexual being.  Having some knowledge on the effects of poetry, it was no wonder that I became  an immediate fan of the Punany Brand. After going through the proper channels to land this Exclusive Interview and a couple of weeks playing phone and email tag, Ms. Holter called me back, expecting to get my voice-mail...Luckily for me, I answered. The interview immediately begin as a "catch up" conversation between old friends. It seemed that we had known each other all of our lives. Her personality was more than nurturing and open, it was heavenly. The conversation was so personal and personable that it lasted for an hour and I had to constantly remind myself, "you ARE conducting an interview, with one of your greatest aspirations...FOCUS". Honored about such a personal accolade: speaking with one of the inspirations for my own lyrical beat, I will attempt to write this interview as it was spontaneously conducted: as a conversation, a story share.

Jessica Holter is a mother, an activist and a gifted orator. She is a product of the Alameda County foster care system in Oakland, CA who was called to preach at the age of twelve, but found her plans derailed by sexual abuse and rape. She used the power of her pen to heal and survive and, at 41, is an accomplished publisher and author. Her famous hard-cover poetry classic Verbal Penetration and he debut novel The Punany Experience: The War Between Tops and Bottoms were published by Zane (Simon & Schuster) are Available at Amazon, along with 6 self- published titles that include the controversial Punany: The Hip Hop Psalms coffee table shocker than launched her into HBO notoriety. Jessica Holter unwittingly created a contemporary urban design of Augusto Boal’s Theater of the Oppressed when she created The Punany Poets in 1995 to address HIV AIDS among disenfranchised Americans of color. See Representin’ the Forbidden, PhD dissertation. Today The Punany Poets is a strong brand and a Theater company dedicated to edutainment through hard-core theatrical presentations surrounding issues of sexuality as it pertains to economics, religion, politics, community mores, self-esteem and health. Read more about The Punany Poets at www.PunanyPoets.com She has just finished writing her sophomore novel Grave Mothers. Visit Jessica Holter online at www.JessicaHolter.com.

As a multifaceted, multi-talented writer, that has connected her passion to her purpose Jessica continues to produce some of the most amazing shows in the world. Addressing taboo topics in minority communities, more specifically, African-American communities, she faces some criticisms, however, she takes pride in being totally supported by her fan base. In a time where HIV/AIDS cases exist at an alarming rate, Ms. Holter, approaches the topic seductively and poetically, to bring awareness to the epidemic that has been infectious in our community. To date, over 230,000 African Americans have died of AIDS - nearly 40 percent of total deaths - and of the more than 1 million people living with HIV in the United States of America today, almost half are black. It is estimated that 78% of African American Women were diagnosed with AIDS by way of heterosexual contact (http://www.avert.org/usa-race-age.htm). Ms. Holter's lyrical attack on the subject matter has been just as infectious. Engaging audiences across the globe, Jessica and the Punany Poets, performs on a platform that encourages couples to open up lines of communication, experience sheer sensuality and have a healthy and productive sexual relationship. Jessica states, that ..."knowledge is freedom and we cant continue living in ignorance with education readily made available to us..."

Friday, June 8th, 2012 8:00pm - The Punany Poets The Head Doctor: Boy Meets Girl. Join Jessica Holter for an intimate and interactive evening of Sex Education Theater. The evening begins with The Head Doctor’s Question & Answer Exchange (30 minutes) and then moves seamlessly into a 90-minute performance of The Head Doctor Show, that is all at once fantastic and familiar, at times inviting audience members to become part of the act. The Head Doctor takes the audience on an emotional roller coaster ride of fantasy and pleasure that explores human sexuality, touching on issues of romance, dating, poverty, prostitution, marriage and sex in the age of HIV/AIDS… all while keeping it sexy and without being preachy or judgmental. The show is humorous, sexy, witty, wise and unforgettable. The Special Edition of The Head Doctor 2012: Boy Meets Girl also offers "Dating Games for Singles" and "Love Confessions" For Couples.

Houston, TX- Change is Going to Come...Isn't It?- Trayvon Martin Case Commentary Update

Today is April 12, 2012 and just yesterday, George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch dog, whose bark was louder than his bite, so he shot an unarmed teen, was FINALLY arrested!!! Its been a long time coming, but was it worth the wait?? The prevalence of racism in the good ole U.S. of A. is alive and well. Prior to the election of President Obama, there was obvious suppression of racist thoughts, words, and actions by those with little to no pigment in their skin. It seems that outright racism is indeed surfacing, due to their inability to handle change and progress. The death of Trayvon Martin, unfortunately, has become the example of such ignorance. I could load this post with tons of facts that are available at the tip of your fingers, but I'd rather not. Instead, I want to give you ALL something to ponder.... How is the Stand Your Ground Law admissible when, Trayvon Martin was the one who was pursued, voice was identified on the 911 calls, wasn't committing a crime, and continued his path home from the store?? The media constantly flood the airways with scattered information, yet the information provided, confirms that Zimmerman wasn't in jeopardy and Trayvon wasn't committing a crime... This world is on the brink of World War 3, and if you aren't part of the 1 percent, and unwilling to submit to them, then you'd better be prepared for the attempt of oppressive regression.

NATIONAL BLACK HIV/AIDS AWARENESS: Community Efforts

February 7, 2011 was National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day! This is monumental due to the startling increase of HIV/AIDS in our community. There are many organizations and community leaders that are doing what they can to spread awareness to this issue that affects us. National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD),  is one of those organizations. NBHAAD, a national HIV/AIDS testing and treatment community mobilization initiative designed to encourage Blacks across the United States and Territorial Areas to get educated, get tested, get involved, and get treated around HIV/AIDS, as it continues to devastate Black communities.

In 2008, an estimated 18,328 Blacks received an AIDS diagnosis, a number that has remained relatively stable since 2005. By the end of 2007, an estimated 233,624 Blacks with a diagnosis of AIDS had died in the US and 5 dependent areas. In 2006, HIV was the ninth leading cause of death for all Blacks and the third leading cause of death for both Black men and Black women aged 35–44. Unfortunately, many of those who are infected with HIV are unaware of their status and may unknowingly transmit the virus to others. It’s time to mobilize and talk about this devastating disease so we can make a difference… and there’s no better time than February 7th! On this commemorative day, Blacks are encouraged to get educated, get tested, get involved, and get treated around HIV/AIDS. Special events such as press conferences, town hall meetings, church services, community marches and rallies, candlelight vigils, and free HIV testing will be held throughout the nation.

“We have to challenge the mindset and notion that Black people are disposable based on their sexual orientation, drug addiction or behavior, we didn’t have that option on the slave ships or plantations – so why now? We can turn this epidemic around if we act now.” says LaMont “Montee” Evans, of Healthy Black Communities, Inc, NBHAAD 2011 Annual Chairperson and a member of the NBHAAD Strategic Leadership Council.

While Blacks represent approximately 13% of the U.S. population, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the group accounts for almost half of the nation’s AIDS cases.

In its eleventh year, NBHAAD organizers remain focused on all cities where Black communities are disproportionately impacted and the epidemic is not slowing. Some of these cities include Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, Newark, New York, Oakland, Philadelphia, Raleigh-Durham, San Francisco, Trenton and Washington, D.C.

Several Black celebrities and community leaders have served as the face and voice of this huge effort while encouraging thousands of Black communities to mobilize and do something that will be long-lasting in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Past spokespersons include: Congressman Elijah E. Cummings; Tony Dungy; Idris Elba; Kimberly Elise; Lance Gross; Hill Harper; Taraji P. Henson; Tom Joyner; Congresswoman Barbara Lee; Ludacris; Master P; Tangi Miller; Patrik-Ian Polk; General Colin Powell; Sheryl Lee Ralph; Gloria Reuben; Romeo; Rev. Edwin Sanders; Tavis Smiley; and Congresswoman Maxine Waters.

Currently, NBHAAD is directed, planned and organized by a group known as the Strategic Leadership Council who partners with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to mobilize communities and address specific issues in regards to local epidemics.
