Go: F**k Yourself: May is National Masturbation Month

We are all aware that each month brings us different events and causes to celebrate  to make us all aware of things that we wouldn't normally pay attention to or weren't informed about. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. November is AIDS Awareness Month. February is Black History Month. Well nothing and I mean NOTHING, could have prepared me for what has to be by far one of the most fun awareness niches celebrated in May: National Masturbation Month....Go on think long and hard on that one! I can't help but reflect that before now May was the month to celebrate Moms. Is anyone thinking that if more people celebrated May as Masturbation Month there would be less mothers celebrating their existence? Its OK, if you are, it has been said now!

National Masturbation month was declared in May, 1995, by San Francisco–based sex-toy and -education shop Good Vibrations.  As with anything progressive, the focus has shifted from primarily Masturbation, to a positive sexual focus and used as a time to provide public health education and information as an approach to safe and healthy sex. An array of events have been created to ensure that this awareness is widespread. One such event is the Masturbate-a-Thon which was originated by the collective Open Enterprises, which operates Good Vibrations in 1999. Rachel Venning, the found of the adult toy shop, formely known as Toy in Babeland (now known as Babeland), coined the slogan "Come for a Cause". (www.Wikipedia.com) Each event, individual and organization has one mission and that is to let people know that self-pleasure is perfectly fine and necessary to de-stigmatize the desire, ability and willingness to sexually 'loving' yourself.

I believe that masturbation is a non-medicinal, therapeutic path to maintaining sanity, however, not everybody thinks this way. Masturbation has a long history of stigma, shame and misconceptions. In Solitary Sex: A Cultural History of Masturbation, historian Thomas W. Laqueur argues that ideas about modern masturbation emerged quite powerfully in the early 18th century in the form of a new “disease” that required medical intervention. Masturbation was thought to cause blindness, madness and a host of other physical ailments and moral defects. By the mid-19th century there was a booming anti-masturbation market, including devices such as erection alarms, penis cases, sleeping mitts and hobbles to prevent girls from spreading their legs. The meanings associated with masturbation underwent a slow but steady transformation in the 20th century. In the 1960s and ’70s, masturbation was embraced by the women’s movement as a vital part of female sexuality and a stepping stone to sexual liberation. Feminists challenged Freud’s theory of sexual development, which posited that both masturbation and clitoral orgasms were infantile. They wrote books, held workshops and started vibrator businesses in an effort to reclaim masturbation as a feminist issue, turning the previous “anti-masturbation” market completely on its head. (http://www.lasvegasweekly.com/news/2011/may/11/may-national-masturbation-month/ )

Playing with oneself is a great way to connect with yourself, find out what you like and how you like it. In addition to that, it is an immediate stress reliever. Then there is always the Use it or lose it.” principal. According to Las Vegas Weekly, "Evidence suggests that when people experience prolonged periods without engaging with their sexual responses, those responses diminish. According to Glickman, “Solo sex is a wonderful way to keep bodies happy, healthy and responsive.'" So Go FUCK Yourself, its natural, common, and healthy. Here's to celebrating the Official Jack-Off Month!!! Indulge and Enjoy!!!

Healthy Fabulous: The No Limit Health & Fashion Expo, No Bars Held!!!

Health and the Black woman have become synonymous terms. The health risks and issues that plague the black woman are plentiful, severe and often untreated. Lack of health care plays a large part in some of these problems. African-American women are less likely to receive health care. When they do get care, they are more likely to get it late. This means, for instance, problems like breast and cervical cancers aren't found early, when they are most treatable. Or, the chance to prevent or delay diabetes is lost. Generations of racism and poverty also play a part. So do lack of trust in the medical system, cultural differences, problems accessing care, and a lack of knowledge about the importance of tests to screen for major health problems. For some diseases, genetics also may contribute to risk. Whatever the reasons for this health gap, African-American women can take charge of their personal health and seek the health care they need. Thanks to awareness campaigns and events black women can become informed about their health. One such event was the NO LIMIT Health and Fashion Expo, presented by Events by NEVI! Lisa Love, the creator extraordinaire of this fabulous event, feels that it's important for womenof color to be educated, supported and inspired, which was the reason for masterminding this event!

Houston, TX- Change is Going to Come...Isn't It?- Trayvon Martin Case Commentary Update

Today is April 12, 2012 and just yesterday, George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch dog, whose bark was louder than his bite, so he shot an unarmed teen, was FINALLY arrested!!! Its been a long time coming, but was it worth the wait?? The prevalence of racism in the good ole U.S. of A. is alive and well. Prior to the election of President Obama, there was obvious suppression of racist thoughts, words, and actions by those with little to no pigment in their skin. It seems that outright racism is indeed surfacing, due to their inability to handle change and progress. The death of Trayvon Martin, unfortunately, has become the example of such ignorance. I could load this post with tons of facts that are available at the tip of your fingers, but I'd rather not. Instead, I want to give you ALL something to ponder.... How is the Stand Your Ground Law admissible when, Trayvon Martin was the one who was pursued, voice was identified on the 911 calls, wasn't committing a crime, and continued his path home from the store?? The media constantly flood the airways with scattered information, yet the information provided, confirms that Zimmerman wasn't in jeopardy and Trayvon wasn't committing a crime... This world is on the brink of World War 3, and if you aren't part of the 1 percent, and unwilling to submit to them, then you'd better be prepared for the attempt of oppressive regression.

Fiya's Red Hot Birthday Bash and ShakeDown...Party with a Purpose

Drinks flowing, music bumping, ladies right and money is too! The ambiance of this room is one of true support and total participation. The crowd is all the way turnt up and ready to party! Ms. Fiya, DJ and comedienne extraordinaire, media mogul, entrepreneur, is working the room from all angles greeting and situating her guests all while, paying the bills and hosting....a woman of many talents and it's her birthday! Fiya as well as her guests arrive all adorned in varying shades of red, fire reds, apple reds, true reds all filled the room! Fiya made a personal commitment for 2012' to help spread and create awareness of social and health issues and organizations that plague and assist our community. Those mentioned were the AIDS Foundation, American Diabetes Association, and The American Heart Association. Once every special guest was in their place, the show begin and Fiya requested that everyone else move in closer because they were special guests too there was just a chair shortage....room erupts in laughter! First on the stage, was the legendary, the sexy, the beautiful New Orleans own,Ghetto Twiins who performed one of their latest hits and then by crowd demand, an old time favorite, "Responsibility". The ladies of course graced the stage, set it on fire, showed up and showed out, getting the crowd good and ready! It mos def took me back being in the presence of the talented duo! Gracing the stage next was, the gorgeously sexy, Chocolate Ty! This talented Houston living female MC added her very special fuel to the fire and torched the friggin place! Performing a very personal new favorite of mine, entitled Thunder Cat, paying homage to the thick thigh power, of the female anatomy. She makes me proud to be a resident of Houston and I am officially a fan, because her talent is astounding and definitely Out-of-this-world...

Houston we have another problem and her name is Chocolate Ty! Other local talent graced the stage such as Ozzy, Too Deep, Qmane, and more! Young D, another up and coming rap artist, remembered a slained friend as he performed a hot track. Money Feen Nation, brought to the stage a hot, drunk, dance energy with the hits like Cookin in My Levi's and HTown Swaggin, that kept the club hype!

Also in participation was Parents Against Predators, an organization that advocates for children that are victims of child and sexual abuse! This was certainly a party with a purpose! Fiya, you have done it once again! Inside this little hot spot situated right in the heart of Houston's Third Ward, at ReBar Houston, there is a great sense of unity and belongingness! I am totally honored to have been invited to have been invited out!

March 24, 2012- Houston, TX The "Million Hoodie" Photoshoot: A Demand of Justice for the Trayvon Martin Murder!

Typically, I try not to cover the same things that captures mainstream media's attention, however, the tragic and disdaining death of Trayvon (not sure of the correct spelling) Martin has compelled me to stand! What has yanked at my activism is the fact that the assailant hasn't been arrested at all. It is alleged that Florida's "Stand Your Ground" Self Defense Law, has protected the neighborhood captain from being arrested, because "that law allows a person to use deadly force when there is a reasonable belief of a threat, without an obligation to retreat first." (http://www.nbc29.com/story/17240646/martin-shooting-sparks-debate-on-self-defense-laws). Now while this makes perfect sense to me I have not always seen it happen...not in Texas at least. While, I'm not certain of the exact statute of the law (because in Texas, you are guilty if they want you to be guilty even when you really aren't) I do know that my neighbor was in fact arrested for shooting one of two car burglars, who had returned to steal the neighbors car a second time after  attempting to steal his car the night before. The young man shot was 18 years old and hispanic. The man arrested was hispanic also. However, I didn't understand why he was arrested for protecting his home from obvious forceful entry attempts, not once but twice. Maybe its not always who you are but where you are nowadays....BUT, in Florida the law seems pretty clear to me. Not the one vaguely stated above but according to:

Florida Statute 776.013 a person defending their home or occupied vehicle from an "unlawful" forceful             entry or attempted forcefulentry by another may use deadly force to stop the invasion or attempted invasion    of the property. In such instances they need not retreat before using deadly force, they need not warn the intruder of their intent to shoot, and there is an absolute presumption that the person attempting the entry was doing so with the intent to commit a violent act (i.e. "forcible felony"), and that the defender is presumed to be acting in reasonable fear of death or great bodily harm to himself or herself. In other words – no arrest or prosecution is technically "legal" if someone without a right of entry or ownership is trying to break in, and you shoot them. In theory – the police and prosecution cannot try to show your fear was unreasonable, or that the intent of the assailant was not to do you or a family member severe injury. Of course, there are some limitations to this statute. The statute states that in order to take advantage of its protections you can’t be engaged in unlawful activity when the incident occurs, the defender must be aware that someone has broken into the house or occupied vehicle, or is attempting to do so, and the person entering the home or occupied vehicle does not have a right or invitation to do so. Anyone legally in the home or occupied vehicle may protect it. However, don’t go shooting at police officers in the performance of their duties. Using force or deadly force against a police officer who enters or is trying to entry a home or vehicle is not protected by the statute,   and is highly illegal.
You may also use a lesser degree of force, “non-deadly force”, which is force that will not usually cause death or great bodily injury, to stop almost any crime so long as a firearm or other deadly weapon is not used by you. If you do use a firearm or other deadly weaponthe law gets complicated, and you may not be acting legally unless you are trying to stop a forcible felony. Under any circumstance, the use of force must be reasonable, and the degree of force used should not be excessive. Using excessive force can be a crime, and even a felony.

Now, I'm interested to know was Trayvon, unlawfully entering Zimmerman's home or car? Based on media coverage, the self appointed neighborhood captain felt that Trayvon was acting suspicious but despite police officers directives to stop following, he continued to follow Trayvon. This alone was more than enough reason to be arrested; He intentionally disregarded the "great authority's" instructions to stop following a BMW (Black Man Walking). I've witnessed and experienced police officers, threatening to arrest because the citizen refused to submit to enforcers of the law... but then again this is Texas. There doesn't need to be a complete investigation to arrest the idiot clearly responsible for following and shooting a kid carrying a bag of candy and an iced tea cause he harbored a 'hunch'. Now of course we know the 'saying' "Innocent until proven guilty", well I guess that only applies to folks that aren't black. With all of the evidence, facts, nothing circumstantial, no arrest have been made simply, because of the extensive bigotry that rest in the breasts of jack asses with power. There was no reason to beat and shoot a Black Man in the 1800's, just as there was no reason to hang a Black Man in the 1950's, there was no reason to drag a Black Man, in the new Millennium, and certainly there was no reason to shoot a Black Man, walking down the street with a fucking hoodie on in 2012!!!!!! We can no longer allow lawmakers, and enforcers continue to operate in their personal bias, and call it heroic protection...can't we just call it what it is...Legal and Political Bullying also known as justified injustice. To them we (black people) are still less than human, can't you tell by the way we're done! At what point does it stop???? Take a Stand against Injustice!!!

Count Me OUT Loud:2012 LGBT Census

Over-representation. Under-representation. No representation! All to often many have fallen in each of these categories in the data collecting series known as the census. From education to city planning, data concerning the LGBT community has been virtually non-existent. Queer the Census, a petitioning campaign orchestrated by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, has identified that the LGBT community isn't considered when collecting data. The purpose is to tell the census: We're here. We're queer. And we want you to ask us about it. . "It's crazy – the U.S. Census Bureau wants an accurate count of everyone in the country – but there's no question in the survey that asks if you are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender." -The Task Force.  Offering its followers, fans, and supporters Queer the Census stickers, The Task Force encourages all to demand that not only are LGBT voices heard but, properly identified. The data collected by the U.S. Census is supposed to calculate the population, capture the amount of diversity that exists, and disaggregate the information collected so that better services in health care, education, business, economic stability and any other element critical to being productive citizens is identified, created, and maintained. However, according to The Task Force, "LGBT people are basically invisible in the survey that is supposed to reflect the diversity of America's population – and that's a big problem." Its clear that data collection has a key impact on issues and the lives of American citizens... LGBT American citizens. But the LGBT community hasn't been counted...until NOW!

On February 1, 2012 the International LGBT census was launched. Created to address the lack that obviously exist in most federal surveys and data collection, provide a clear, accurate account of the LGBT community present in the US and abroad, the International LGBT survey has afforded the LGBT community a platform for our voices to be heard and presence counted. Founded by Terrance Luckett of Atlanta (known as the LGBT capital), “The LGBT 2012 Census is a highly ambitious initiative to collect over one million voices,” said Luckett, who noted the survey is available in most English speaking countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, South Africa and India." Slated to run through April 30, 2012, the LGBT 2012 Census, gathers general demographic information but is extended to get snapshots inside LGBT lives and homes. Data reports are made available to organizations that support LGBT causes, media outlets, and for research purposes. Barely a month old, the LGBT 2012 census, has had an overwhelming response. With over 3500 likes on FB, a strong media presence, its no doubt the the LGBT 2012 Census will do what it set out to do: Being the change we want to see and the bull horn needed to get the attention of the voluntarily blind and deaf.
